My prayers are with all of you who will be personally involved. I also hope that the powers take this in stride and do not do anything repressive. Hell's bells--my freshman yearbook from 1962 has pics of a student demonstration over censoring of the Review. One sign reads "We speak of student responsibility. Let's make it a reality." There was even a contentious assembly in what is now the Carey Center. As far as I know, no one was disciplined, although older alums who may see this can correct me. I do recall, however, one of the hard line monks telling one senior that his GPA was nothing to rave about and that he should devote more time to that rather than to protesting! I guess with 750-800 guys as the student body, getting personal was not too difficult.

Also proud of you for standing up against injustice. Let's hope that Father Gruber is vindicated and that SVC admin see the error of their ways.

Any word on how things went down on Wednesday?

It went really well. We had ~70 people wearing shirts, and probably would have had more had we printed more extras. Originally we only had 20 extra shirts to give out, and they were all gone by 11 a.m. Wednesday morning. As far as I know, only one person received a negative comment, and I think that stemmed more from ignorance of the situation than of anything. For the most part, everyone was very supportive. Look for the article in the Post Gazette on Monday!

One part of this morning's Post-Gazette article hits the real issue here: "Campus computer technicians had found pornography on his computer as they searched for the source of an e-mail criticizing the college administration." Questions arise: Do these folks have anything better to do? Was the e-mail a threat of violence or simply criticism? Or is simple criticism of the administration considered a form of violence?

Some may not agree, but I think Brother Norman is a good guy who cares about SVC. With what has gone on the past few years, he may see himself as Hercules contemplating the Augean stables. Yeah, that's a bit hyperbolic, but the mess is there and won't vanish without work.
